Today, access to mental health support in the UK is challenging, contributing to the workforce sickness epidemic, economic losses and a higher demand being placed on third sector mental health support services.

Across the UK

Total planned mental health spending by NHS England is £13.671bn (2025/26), a 12% increase on actual spend for the prior year.

In the workplace

Employee sick days have risen from an average of 7.8 to 9.4, in just two years, with mental ill health remaining the leading cause of absence.

In the community

80% of people experienced a deterioration in their mental health as they waited for support.

We are committed to our purpose of improving access to healthcare for all in the UK, with a specific focus on mental health support. Led by mutual values, in addition to our health plans and on-demand digital health services, we are helping through our charitable commitment too.

Business as a force for good

Through a £1m per year charitable investment, we have an ambition to:

  • Increase public and workplace awareness of mental health, with a particular focus on prevention.

  • Improve mental health support in the workplace, with a particular focus on SME (Small to Medium size Enterprises).

  • Enhance community mental health support, with a particular focus on reducing unmet demand for urgent mental health help.

We have carefully selected and partnered with three leading national mental health charities to deliver positive impacts across the UK to meet these aims.

The Mental Health Foundation focuses solely on preventing poor mental health, whilst building and protecting good mental health by:

  • Researching and developing new and more effective ways to support positive mental health.

  • Providing everyone with evidence-backed advice and resources they can trust.

  • Running national campaigns and working with local communities to nurture good mental health.

  • Working with organisations across the UK and influencing decision-makers at all levels, to take the valuable lessons we’ve learned and adopt solutions that are proven to work.
